Lesson 2: Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden - Our First Home and Family

Memory Verse

“Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.”

— Genesis 2:15 (WEB)

What We Will Learn Today

  • The Breath of Life: Yahweh God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.
  • A Beautiful Home in Eden: God planted a marvellous garden eastward in Eden with four sparkling rivers and every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.
  • Work and Responsibility: God put Adam in the garden to cultivate and keep it, and to name all the animals and birds.
  • Loving Obedience: God gave Adam one clear rule—not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  • The First Family: God made Eve from one of Adam’s ribs to be a helper comparable to him, blessing the very first marriage and family.

1. Opening Prayer

“Dear Lord God our Maker, thank You for breathing the breath of life into us and giving us our families and homes. As we open Your holy Word today to learn about Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, help us to listen carefully, obey Your voice, and care for everything You have entrusted to us. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.”

2. Opening Praise Song

Sing Together: “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”

He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole wide world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands,
He’s got the whole world in His hands!

He’s got the birds and the animals in His hands...
He’s got our brothers and our sisters in His hands...
He’s got the whole world in His hands!

3. Introduction: A Home Prepared with Love

In Lesson 1, we learned how God created the heavens and the earth in six days and rested on the seventh day, the holy Sabbath. Today, in Genesis Chapter 2, the World English Bible (WEB) zooms in like a camera to show us the wonderful details of how God made the first man and woman—Adam and Eve—and the special garden home He prepared just for them!

Just as loving parents prepare a clean, safe room and good food for their children, our Heavenly Father prepared a paradise called the garden of Eden for Adam and Eve.

4. The Bible Story: Inside the Garden of Eden

Part 1: God Forms Adam from the Dust of the Ground (Genesis 2:4–7, WEB)

When Yahweh God first made the earth and the heavens, no rain had yet fallen on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground. Instead, a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground (Genesis 2:5–6, WEB).

Then God did something extraordinary! Like a master potter shaping soft clay with His hands, “Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7, WEB). God named the first man Adam.

God Places Adam in the Lush Garden of Eden Watered by Four Rivers
Genesis 2:7–15 (WEB): God formed Adam from the dust of the ground, breathed into him the breath of life, and placed him in the garden of Eden.

Part 2: The Garden of Eden and the Four Rivers (Genesis 2:8–14, WEB)

Next, Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden (a name that means “Delight”), and there He put the man whom He had formed. Out of the ground, Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food—trees heavy with sweet fruits, nuts, and colourful blossoms.

Right in the middle of the garden stood two special trees (Genesis 2:9, WEB):

  • The Tree of Life
  • The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became four heads (four rivers) (Genesis 2:10–14, WEB):

  1. Pishon: Which flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is good gold, bdellium, and the onyx stone.
  2. Gihon: Which flows through the whole land of Cush.
  3. Hiddekel (Tigris): Which goes in front of Assyria.
  4. Euphrates: The fourth river.

Part 3: Adam’s Special Job and God’s One Rule (Genesis 2:15–17, WEB)

God did not put Adam in the garden to be idle! Our Memory Verse (Genesis 2:15, WEB) tells us: “Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.” That means Adam’s job was to tend the plants, care for the trees, and guard the garden. Work is a blessing from God!

Then Yahweh God commanded the man, saying:

“You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.” — Genesis 2:16–17 (WEB)

God was so generous—Adam could freely eat from hundreds of delicious trees! God gave this one simple rule so Adam could show his love, trust, and obedience to his Creator.

Adam Naming All the Animals and Birds in the Garden of Eden
Genesis 2:19–20 (WEB): God brought every animal of the field and every bird of the sky to the man, and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

Part 4: Adam Names All the Animals and Birds (Genesis 2:18–20, WEB)

God gave Adam another exciting task! Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name (Genesis 2:19, WEB).

Imagine watching the tall giraffe, the gentle lamb, the mighty lion, the huge elephant, and the colourful birds walk past as Adam thoughtfully gave each one its name!

The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him (Genesis 2:20, WEB).

Adam and Eve Rejoicing Together as the First Family in the Garden of Eden
Genesis 2:21–24 (WEB): God made Eve to be a helper comparable to Adam, creating the very first family in the peaceful garden of Eden.

Part 5: God Creates Eve — The First Family (Genesis 2:21–25, WEB)

Yahweh God knew right away what Adam needed. God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.” (Genesis 2:18, WEB).

So Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. He made the rib, which Yahweh God had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man (Genesis 2:21–22, WEB).

When Adam woke up and saw her, his heart was filled with joy! The man said:

“This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman’, because she was taken out of Man.” — Genesis 2:23 (WEB)

In this way, God created the very first marriage and family! Adam and his wife Eve lived together in peace, purity, and happiness in the garden of Eden, walking in friendship with God.
