“Abraham said, ‘God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.’ So they both went together.”
— Genesis 22:8 (WEB)
3. What We Will Learn Today
- How God kept His promise to 100-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah when baby Isaac was born at the exact set time, bringing joyful laughter and a great feast.
- How God tested Abraham’s faith when Isaac grew into a young boy by asking Abraham to take him to a mountain in the land of Moriah.
- Why Abraham obeyed early in the morning without doubting: he trusted that God would provide (and even believed God could raise Isaac from the dead, Hebrews 11:19).
- How the angel of Yahweh called from the sky to stop Abraham and pointed him to a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.
- Why Abraham named that mountain “Yahweh Will Provide” (Hebrew: Yahweh Yireh), pointing forward to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God!
4. The Complete Story of Baby Isaac & Abraham’s Big Test
Part A: Baby Isaac is Born & Grows Up in Joy (Genesis 21:1–8)
When Abraham first left Haran at 75 years old, God promised to make him a great nation. Twenty-five years passed, and when Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety years old, God fulfilled His promise at the exact time He had spoken:
“Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said, and Yahweh did to Sarah as he had spoken. Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham called his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.” — Genesis 21:1–3 (WEB)
On the eighth day, Abraham obeyed God’s covenant command and circumcised baby Isaac. Sarah’s heart overflowed with thanksgiving, and as little Isaac grew into a healthy, happy child, Abraham held a joyful celebration:
“Sarah said, ‘God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.’ ... The child grew, and was weaned. Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.” — Genesis 21:6, 8 (WEB)
Abraham and Sarah loved Isaac dearly. All of God’s promises for the future nation were tied to this one special son!
Part B: Abraham’s Big Test on Mount Moriah (Genesis 22:1–8)
Years later, when Isaac had grown into a strong young boy, God gave Abraham the biggest test of his life. Did Abraham love God’s gift (Isaac) more than he loved and trusted God the Giver? Listen to how the Bible describes this test:
“After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ He said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will tell you of.’” — Genesis 22:1–2 (WEB)
Wait—God had already promised that through Isaac, Abraham’s family would become as numerous as the stars! How could that promise come true if Isaac was offered up? The New Testament tells us Abraham’s secret of faith: Abraham trusted God so completely that he believed “that God is able to raise up even from the dead” (Hebrews 11:19, WEB)!
So early the next morning, Abraham saddled his donkey, split the firewood, and set out with two young servants and his son Isaac. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the mountain in the land of Moriah far off. He told his two servants to wait with the donkey, saying in faith: “I and the boy will go yonder and worship, and come back to you” (Genesis 22:5, WEB).
As father and son climbed the quiet mountain path together, Isaac noticed something missing:
“Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. He took in his hand the fire and the knife. They both went together. Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, ‘My father?’ He said, ‘Here I am, my son.’ He said, ‘Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?’ Abraham said, ‘God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.’ So they both went together.” — Genesis 22:6–8 (WEB)
Part C: “Yahweh Will Provide!” — The Ram in the Thicket (Genesis 22:9–19)
On top of Mount Moriah, Abraham built a stone altar and arranged the wood. Both Abraham and young Isaac trusted God completely. Just as Abraham reached out his hand, heaven opened and a voice called out urgently:
“Yahweh’s angel called to him out of the sky, and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ He said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Don’t lay your hand on the boy, neither do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.’” — Genesis 22:11–12 (WEB)
Abraham had passed the big test! God never wanted Isaac to be harmed; He was testing Abraham’s heart of obedience and trust. And right at that moment, Abraham’s words to Isaac came true before their very eyes:
“Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham called the name of that place Yahweh Will Provide. As it is said to this day, ‘On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.’” — Genesis 22:13–14 (WEB)
In Hebrew, “Yahweh Will Provide” is Yahweh Yireh (Jehovah-Jireh). Then Yahweh’s angel called to Abraham a second time from the sky with a glorious blessing because Abraham had obeyed God’s voice:
“...that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is on the seashore... In your offspring will all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” — Genesis 22:17–18 (WEB)
And how was that promise fulfilled for us? Thousands of years later, God Himself provided His only Beloved Son, Jesus Christ—“the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29, WEB).
