Lesson 15: Jacob's Ladder - God's Presence and Promise at Bethel
1. Key Bible Reading
Passage: Genesis 28:10 – 28:22 (also referencing John 1:51 and Hebrews 13:5, World English Bible – WEB).
Teachers and parents: Read Genesis 28:10–22 aloud with the children. Ask them how they would feel sleeping outside on the ground, and help them imagine the glorious golden stairway connecting earth directly to heaven!
2. Memory Verse to Learn by Heart
“Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”
— Genesis 28:15 (WEB)
3. What We Will Learn Today
- How Jacob departed from Beersheba on a long journey toward Haran, stopping at sundown to sleep with a stone for his pillow.
- The wonderful dream God gave him: a stairway (ladder) set on the earth reaching up to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it.
- How Yahweh stood above the stairway, renewed the covenant promise of Abraham and Isaac, and promised: “I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go.”
- Jacob’s joyful awakening and exclamation: “Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn’t know it!” (Genesis 28:16).
- How Jacob set up the stone as a pillar, poured oil on top of it, named the place Bethel (“House of God”), and vowed to give a tenth (tithe) of everything to God.
4. The Complete Story of Jacob’s Ladder at Bethel
Part A: The Lonely Journey & The Stone Pillow (Genesis 28:10–11)
Jacob was leaving everything he knew behind. Because of the trouble with his brother Esau, his mother Rebekah and father Isaac had sent him north toward Haran to find safety with his uncle Laban. As Jacob walked across the hills of Canaan with his walking staff, the sun went down and deep darkness fell across the land.
There were no hotels, no warm beds, and no tents around. But listen to what Jacob did:
“Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.” — Genesis 28:10–11 (WEB)
Can you imagine resting your head on a hard, cold rock as a pillow? Jacob must have felt lonely, tired, and full of regret. He was separated from his loving mother, uncertain about his future, and alone in the wilderness. Yet even when we feel all alone in the dark, God is watching over us!
Part B: The Stairway to Heaven & God’s Covenant Promise (Genesis 28:12–15)
While Jacob lay asleep on the stony ground, God opened his eyes in a magnificent dream:
“He dreamed and behold, a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it. Behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, ‘I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your offspring.’” — Genesis 28:12–13 (WEB)
What a breathtaking sight! A brilliant, shining stairway (often called Jacob’s Ladder) connected the dusty earth where Jacob slept directly to the throne room of heaven! Friendly, radiant angels of God were travelling up and down upon it, showing that heaven and earth are closely connected and that God sends His angels to minister to His children.
At the top of the stairway stood Yahweh Himself. God did not scold Jacob or turn away from him; instead, God poured out gracious promises of comfort and protection:
“Your offspring will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your offspring will all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.” — Genesis 28:14–15 (WEB)
God promised four wonderful things: His presence (“I am with you”), His protection (“and will keep you wherever you go”), His safe return (“and will bring you again into this land”), and His everlasting faithfulness (“I will not leave you”).
Part C: “Surely Yahweh Is in This Place!” — The Pillar at Bethel (Genesis 28:16–22)
When Jacob woke up, the dark night was gone, but his heart was filled with holy awe and reverence:
“Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, ‘Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn’t know it.’ He was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’” — Genesis 28:16–17 (WEB)
Jacob thought he was all alone in the wilderness, but Yahweh was right there with him! Early in the morning, Jacob took the very stone he had used as a pillow, set it upright as a standing memorial pillar, and poured fragrant olive oil on top of it to consecrate it to God:
“Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on its top. He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.” — Genesis 28:18–19 (WEB)
In Hebrew, Bethel means “House of God” (Beth = house, El = God). Before continuing on his journey with a joyful and confident heart, Jacob made a sacred vow to God:
“Jacob vowed a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, and Yahweh will be my God, then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give the tenth to you.’” — Genesis 28:20–22 (WEB)
In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus Christ revealed that He is the true stairway connecting heaven and earth: “Most certainly I tell you, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man” (John 1:51, WEB). Through Jesus, we can talk to God anytime, anywhere!
