2. Memory Verse to Learn by Heart
“Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, ‘It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.’”
— Genesis 41:16 (WEB)
3. What We Will Learn Today
- How Pharaoh had two troubling dreams by the River Nile: seven fat cows eaten by seven skinny cows, and seven plump ears of grain swallowed by seven withered ears.
- Why Egypt’s magicians and wise men could not understand the dreams: because true wisdom belongs exclusively to Yahweh!
- How the chief cupbearer finally confessed his fault: “I remember my faults today” (Genesis 41:9), and told Pharaoh about Joseph.
- Joseph’s glorious humility before the king: “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace” (Genesis 41:16).
- The meaning of the dreams: seven years of great abundance followed by seven years of severe famine across the world.
- How Pharaoh recognized the Spirit of God in Joseph, gave him his royal signet ring, fine linen robes, a gold chain, and made thirty-year-old Joseph prime minister of Egypt!
4. The Complete Story of Pharaoh’s Dreams
Part A: Pharaoh’s Troubling Dreams by the River Nile (Genesis 41:1–13)
Two full years passed after the cupbearer was restored to his office. Joseph was still quietly waiting in the Egyptian prison, trusting in God’s unseen timing. Then one night, Pharaoh had a strange and vivid dream:
“At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed: and behold, he stood by the river. Behold, out of the river came up seven sleek and fat cattle, and they fed in the reed grass. Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin... and the ugly and thin cattle ate up the seven sleek and fat cattle.” — Genesis 41:1–4 (WEB)
Pharaoh woke up startled! He fell back asleep and had a second dream: seven plump, golden, healthy ears of grain grew on a single stalk. Then seven thin, withered ears, blasted by the scorching desert east wind, sprang up and swallowed the healthy ears!
In the morning, Pharaoh’s spirit was deeply troubled. He summoned all the magicians, astrologers, and wise men in all Egypt. But not one of them could explain the dreams! At that exact moment, God stirred the memory of the chief cupbearer:
“Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, ‘I remember my faults today... A young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, was there with us. We told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams... and it happened just as he interpreted to us.’” — Genesis 41:9–13 (WEB)
Part B: Joseph Stands Before Pharaoh with Divine Wisdom (Genesis 41:14–36)
Pharaoh immediately sent royal messengers to the prison. They brought Joseph out hastily! Joseph shaved, put on clean garments, and stood before the mighty emperor of Egypt. Pharaoh looked at him and said:
“Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.’” — Genesis 41:15 (WEB)
Imagine that! Joseph could have boasted or asked for money. Instead, Joseph showed true godly character and pointed Pharaoh straight to God:
“Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, ‘It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.’” — Genesis 41:16 (WEB)
After Pharaoh described the dreams, Joseph explained with radiant clarity:
- One Message: Both dreams mean the exact same thing! God was showing Pharaoh what He was about to do.
- Seven Good Years: The seven fat cows and seven healthy ears represent seven years of great plenty and abundance across all Egypt.
- Seven Famine Years: The seven thin cows and seven withered ears represent seven years of severe famine that will consume the land so thoroughly that the abundance will be forgotten!
- God’s Double Confirmation: The dream was doubled because the matter was firmly established by God and would happen very soon!
Then Joseph gave Pharaoh wise counsel: appoint a discreet and wise man over Egypt to collect one-fifth of all the grain during the seven good years, building giant storehouses in every city so the nation would not starve when the famine arrived (Genesis 41:33–36).
Part C: From Prison to Palace: Joseph Exalted Over Egypt (Genesis 41:37–57)
Pharaoh and all his palace officials were astonished at Joseph’s wisdom. The king turned to his court and proclaimed:
“Pharaoh said to his servants, ‘Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?’ Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Because God has shown you all this, there is no one as discreet and wise as you. You shall be over my house, and according to your word all my people will be ruled. Only in the throne will I be greater than you.’” — Genesis 41:38–40 (WEB)
In a single morning, God took Joseph from the prison floor to the highest leadership seat in the ancient world!
Pharaoh took his golden signet ring from his finger and placed it upon Joseph’s hand. He clothed him in robes of fine linen, put a gleaming gold necklace about his neck, and made him ride in the second chariot of the kingdom while people bowed before him (Genesis 41:42–43). Joseph was thirty years old when he became ruler over Egypt (Genesis 41:46).
During the seven years of abundance, the earth produced huge harvests. Joseph gathered grain and stored it in cities until it was beyond measure—like the sand of the sea! When the seven years of famine came, crops withered everywhere, but in Egypt there was bread in every storehouse! All countries came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe across the whole earth (Genesis 41:57). God had fulfilled His promise!
