Lesson 9: Three Visitors and Sarah's Laughter - Is Anything Too Hard for Yahweh?

Welcome, Children of God!

In our previous lessons, we learnt how God promised Abram and Sarai a family as numerous as the stars in the sky and the dust of the earth. Before today’s story in Lesson 9, God gave them special new names: Abraham (meaning “father of a multitude of nations”) and Sarah (meaning “princess”). Today we open Genesis chapters 18 and 21 to see what happened when three heavenly visitors arrived at Abraham’s tent by the oaks of Mamre with the most wonderful news of all!

1. Key Bible Reading

Passage: Genesis 18:1 – 18:15 and Genesis 21:1 – 21:7 (also referencing Genesis 17:5, 15–19 and Hebrews 13:2, World English Bible – WEB).
Teachers and parents: Read Genesis 18:1–15 and Genesis 21:1–7 aloud with the children. Ask the children what makes them laugh with great joy!

2. Memory Verse to Learn by Heart

“Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round, and Sarah will have a son.”
— Genesis 18:14 (WEB)

3. What We Will Learn Today

  • How God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah as part of His everlasting covenant.
  • How Abraham showed wonderful kindness and hospitality when three visitors appeared at his tent by the oaks of Mamre in the heat of the day.
  • Why Sarah laughed within herself at the tent door when she heard that she would have a baby son in her old age.
  • God’s mighty question that answers every doubt: “Is anything too hard for Yahweh?” (Genesis 18:14).
  • How God kept His promise at the exact set time: baby Isaac (whose name means “He laughs”) was born when Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 years old!

4. The Complete Story of the Three Visitors and Sarah’s Laughter

Abraham Welcomes the Three Visitors by the Oaks of Mamre
Part A: By the oaks of Mamre, Abraham runs to welcome the three visitors and prepares a generous meal under the tree (Genesis 18:1–8).

Part A: Abraham’s Kind Hospitality by the Oaks of Mamre (Genesis 18:1–8)

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, God appeared to him and gave him a brand-new name: Abraham, because God had made him the father of a multitude of nations (Genesis 17:5). God also changed Sarai’s name to Sarah, promising that she would be the mother of nations and would bear a son named Isaac (Genesis 17:15–19).

Soon afterwards, while Abraham was sitting at his tent door in the heat of the afternoon by the oaks of Mamre, something marvellous happened:

“Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood opposite him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,” — Genesis 18:1–2 (WEB)

Even though Abraham was 99 years old and it was the hottest part of the day, he ran eagerly to welcome the three visitors! One of the visitors was Yahweh Himself appearing in human form accompanied by two angels. Abraham invited them to rest in the cool shade of the oak tree, brought water so their dusty feet could be washed, and hurried to prepare a generous feast:

“Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, ‘Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.’ Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it. He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.” — Genesis 18:6–8 (WEB)

In the New Testament, the Bible reminds us of Abraham’s kindness: “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:2, WEB).

Sarah Listens at the Tent Door and Laughs Within Herself
Part B: Sarah hears the promise at the tent door and laughs within herself, and Yahweh asks, “Is anything too hard for Yahweh?” (Genesis 18:9–15).

Part B: Sarah’s Secret Laughter & God’s Great Question (Genesis 18:9–15)

After the meal under the oak tree, the Visitors asked a question that showed they knew all about Abraham’s family—even though Sarah was hidden inside the tent:

“They said to him, ‘Where is Sarah, your wife?’ He said, ‘See, in the tent.’ He said, ‘I will certainly return to you at about this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.’ Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.” — Genesis 18:9–10 (WEB)

Abraham was 99 years old and Sarah was 89 years old! For decades Sarah had wished for a child, and now it seemed humanly impossible. When Sarah heard the Visitor say that in just one year she would hold her very own baby son, what did she do?

“Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age... Sarah laughed within herself, saying, ‘After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?’” — Genesis 18:11–12 (WEB)

Notice that Sarah laughed within herself—quietly inside her own heart, hidden behind the tent curtain! No ordinary human visitor could have seen her face or heard her silent thought. Yet Yahweh hears even the quietest thoughts of our hearts:

“Yahweh said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh, saying, “Will I really bear a child, yet I am old?” Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round, and Sarah will have a son.’ Then Sarah denied it, saying, ‘I didn’t laugh,’ for she was afraid. He said, ‘No, but you did laugh.’” — Genesis 18:13–15 (WEB)

God gently corrected Sarah because He wanted her to know two wonderful truths: first, we should always tell God the truth and never deny what we have done; and second, nothing is too hard or impossible for Almighty Yahweh!

Abraham and Sarah Rejoice at the Birth of Baby Isaac
Part C: At the exact set time, baby Isaac is born, turning Sarah’s doubt into joyful laughter of praise (Genesis 21:1–7).

Part C: Promise Kept! The Birth of Baby Isaac (Genesis 21:1–7)

Did Yahweh keep His promise at the exact time He had spoken? Yes! One year later, when Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety years old, their promised baby boy was born!

“Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said, and Yahweh did to Sarah as he had spoken. Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham called his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.” — Genesis 21:1–3 (WEB)

Why did God command them to name the baby Isaac? Because in Hebrew, the name Isaac means “He laughs” (or “Laughter”)! Before, Sarah had laughed silently in doubt; now, God filled her mouth and her home with joyful laughter of thanksgiving! Listen to Sarah’s happy song:

“Abraham was one hundred years old when his son, Isaac, was born to him. Sarah said, ‘God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.’” — Genesis 21:5–6 (WEB)
